Minister of Legal Affairs Prakash Ramadhar said on Saturday the People's Partnership government is not giving up on the war on crime.
The leader of the Congress of the People, one of the partners in the governing coalition, was reacting to the horrific murders of seven citizens within a 24 hours period.
"As you know crime, generally in terms of numbers and murders number-wise, has been on the down," the minister said.
He added, "But that is not a comfort to me or anybody here. A killing anywhere is an atrocious thing and we need to appreciate what is the root cause of it because clearly we need to find out how Trinidad and Tobago came to this point before it seems to be the order of the day."
Ramadhar laid some of the blame for crime on the previous administration, noting that the new government inherited generations of neglect in the war on crime and has done its best to give the police the resources its needs to win that war.
