Police kill two bandits on day 1 of emergency

Arima crime scene
ON the first day of a limited State of Emergency in Trinidad Monday police shot and killed two bandits in Arima, one of the areas under the emergency. They also recovered two high-powered rifles and a Glock .45 pistol from the dead men.

They said a third suspect, who attempted to disguise himself as an employee of Goodwood Racing Service, was subsequently detained by police.

The incident occurred shortly after seven in the morning near the Arima Police station. Media reports said the dead men were not identified up to press time.

The report said the bandits entered the racing and tried to rob the four members of staff and the lone customer in the office. Police responded to a call that a robbery was in progress.

The media reports said when the police arrived the suspects fired on the officers. A shootout began. Two of the men suffered fatal wounds and were pronounced dead on arrival at the Arima hospital. The third suspect was arrested.
