PM Kamla pledges to keep State of Emergency only as long as necessary

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said Monday night the state of emergency now in force in certain parts of Trinidad & Tobago is part of a well thought-out plan, which will be carried out with precision.

She also gave a guarantee that protective services personnel will treat law abiding citizens with courtesy.

Persad-Bissessar made the points as she spoke with the media during a meeting with senior police officers at Mon Repos, San Fernando. National Security Minister John Sandy accompanied her on the visit.

"We want to express our satisfaction with the results up to this point in time on the exercise carried out on the joint military and military unit operating under this limited state of emergency...Some of the measurements of success include arrests, interrogation of key criminal elements, weapons confiscation and disbanding of some gangs.

"I understand the exercise being carried out across the country may create concern among the population but I do want to assure citizens that there is no need for anxiety, the plan to take back our streets has been well thought out and carried out with precision," she said.

"Our nation will be better off at the end of this exercise and under control the criminal elements are being thrashed out from their hiding spots. They wanted to wage a war against you, well we have responded with everything at our disposal," Persad-Bissessar added.

The Prime Minister acknowledges that during the emergency people's lives will be disruptive and businesses will be affected. However she said the move is to help the nation.

"Please be assured that we will not continue with the imposition of this limited state of emergency for a day or hour longer than is necessary, but neither will we cease it a minute before its positive objective have been achieved," she said.

Persad-Bissessar said an interministerial team has been appointed to monitor the results of the state of emergency.
