The minister of national security in Trinidad and Tobago said Tuesday law enforcement officers have arrested a number of suspected gang leaders and members in East Port of Spain.
"We were able to apprehend 22 members of gangs, including gang leaders, in Trinidad, particularly in the East Port of Spain area. This is by no means the end of it. We have now started," Brigadier John Sandy said.
In one raid in Port of Spain officers raided and searched several apartments. They arrested several men for possession of ammunition and illegal drugs.
They found cocaine, ammunition. 9mm ammunition in the apartments. Police loaded several young men into two pick-up vans to take them intio custody. Several residents shouted abuse at the police.
Under the powers of the emergency regulations, the men would be denied bail.
