PTSC demands payment of debt by PNM; party says it paid all outstanding debt

The People's National Movement (PNM) said on Monday it has settled all its debt to the Public Transport Service (PTSC). However that conflicts with what the PTSC is saying.

The transit company sent a pre-action protocol letter to the PNM Monday for payment of $100,604.50 for the charter of buses for the 2010 general election. The PTSC's lawyer, Jagdeo Singh, gave the PNM 14 days to settle the debt or face court action.

However both the PNM treasurer, Mariano Browne, and its general secretary, Ashton Forde, told the Express newspaper they are not aware of that debt.

Ford confirmed the party received the letter and added that the PNM would not be "intimidated or threatened" by the PTSC.

Ford told the newspaper the PNM paid on May 12, 2010 $297,250 to the PTSC and on February 22, 2011 it paid $44,200. "As far as we are concerned we have paid off the balance that was due," Ford said.

The PTSC has also alleged that the rates charged by PTSC for the charter of buses were "far lower than the prevailing market rates at that time" and that the special rates were arbitrarily approved by former PTSC chairman Telly Paul".
