The election team of the Congress of the People (COP) has banned leadership candidates from making personal attacks on individuals. It addition it has put a $25,000 limit on media advertising for the July 3, election.
The chairman of the Election team Valance Rambharrat told reporters Monday that he spoke with the campaign teams for both Anil Roberts and Vernon de Lima about the need to follow election rules that the party outlined on Saturday.
One of those rules relates to mudslinging. The campaign team wants each of the four candidates to focus on issues. Rambharrat said anyone who violates any of the rules can be disqualified from the vote.
Rambharrat told reporters Monday at the close of nomination four candidates had filed entered their names for the contest to succeed Dookeran.
One feature of the campaign will be a series of national debates involving the four candidates - Roberts, de Lima, Prakash Ramadhar and Nalini Dial.
