Former PNM minister facing assault charge

Police say they will lay charges on Thursday against a former minister in the Manning PNM administration. Rennie Dumas is accused of common assault and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Martin George, attorney for the alleged victim, Roger Simon, sent a complaint on Monday to Attorney General Anand Ramlogan, Director of Public Prosecutions Roger Gaspard and Commissioner of Police Dwayne Gibbs pointing out that police had failed to act in the case.

The lawyer said when his client went to police about the matter they told Simon they cannot "go about locking up a government minister just so".

That prompted George to write to Ramlogan, Gaspard and Gibbs. On Wednesday, Ramlogan confirmed receiving the letter.

The Express newspaper quoted the AG as saying he wrote to Gibbs suggesting an urgent investigation into an "apparent police bias in light of the facts and circumstances of the alleged assault on a private citizen by a former senior government minister".

Ramlogan added, "It is difficult to understand the inaction and delay in properly responding to a person's cry because of political interference."

George said police acted only after he sent the letters to Ramlogan, Gaspard and Gibbs.

Simon has claimed that Dumas accused him of stealing materials from his family's land near Arnos Vale in Plymouth, Tobago, a charge that Simon has denied.

Simon added that Dumas wanted to meet him to discuss the matter. However he alleged that when he met Dumas the former minister beat him about the face with the pistol. He told police the attack caused injury to his face. He also lost two front teeth.
