Rennie Dumas told the Express newspaper on Wednesday he did not hit a man in Tobago with a gun butt during an altercation in Tobago.
He admitted getting into an altercation with a man. However the former cabinet minister said he acted in self defence after the man, whom he accused of stealing from him, hit him.
"There was an altercation in which I acted in self-defence. I reported it to the police. I did not know that the police decided to charge me instead of the man who stole my things," he said.
"You have people going around the country, stealing people's things and selling it as scrap iron," he said. He told the paper police found evidence to support his claim about the theft.
Dumas added, "I am a victim."
