JYOTI has confirmed that Dr Bhoendratt Tewarie will be Trinidad and Tobago's new Minister of Planning, Economic, Social Restructuring and Gender Affairs.
Tewarie, 63, accepted Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s invitation to serve in cabinet within hours of the dismissal of Mary King over the award of a contract for website development at the planning ministry.
JYOTI's sources say Tewari will take the oath of office at 11:30 Wednesday. He would first have to be sworn in as a government senator.
The office of the Prime Minister has confirmed that a new planning minister will be sworn in at that time and that Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar will attend. However it did not name the person who will be the new senator and minister.
Tewarie is Pro-Vice Chancellor, Planning and Development, of the University of the West Indies and former Principal of the St Augustine campus. He also served as director of the UWI Institute of Business for nine years before his appointment as principal in September 2001, which ended in 2007.
Tewari was elected as the MP for Caroni East in the 1986 general election and was Minister of Industry, Enterprise and Tourism in the He served in the NAR administration of A.N.R.Robinson. Tewari was involved in strategy for the People's Partnership in the 2010 general election.
