PM says media story "erroneous"; awaiting report on award of government contract

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessasr said on Sunday a media report published in one of the country's newspapers is "entirely and categorically erroneous."

Persad-Bissessar was responding to a report in the Express newspaper concerning tendering for a contract in the ministry of planning, suggesting that there might have been a conflict of interest involving the minister, Senator Mary King.

The report quoted King as saying that the PM had been informed about the contract and that she was satisfied with it.

In fact Persad-Bissessar said when she first learned of it "the process had been completed and I made it clear that, on the basis of the information provided me, it was highly inappropriate."

She said she is awaiting a full report "so that I may be better informed to make a decision which ensures that the integrity of the Government remains intact." She said she will make no additional comment on the matter until then.

JYOTI has published the full statement below:

"Media reports published today (Sunday), attributed to Minister of Planning, Economic and Social Restructuring and Gender Affairs, Mary King, which state that I as Prime Minister had been informed of the whole tendering process on the Government website development contract, are entirely and categorically erroneous.

"The matter was brought to my attention recently after the process had been completed and I made it clear that, on the basis of the information provided me, it was highly inappropriate.

"At this time I am awaiting a report on the matter so that I may be better informed to make a decision which ensures that the integrity of the Government remains intact.

"Until that time I wish to make no further comment on the issue."

And in anticipation of those rabid critics of anything and everything the PM and the PP do and say, can there truly be anything more, or different that the Prime Minister can say or do, until such time as she gets appraised of all the facts?
