Villagers attack cutlass bandits; one man dead

People living in Old Clarke Road in Penal on Thursday rescued a family from two attackers and inflicted blows on one of the men. The dead man has been identified as Kenton Contara of Freeport.

Media reports on the incident say the victims of the attempted robbery - Roger Hosein his wife, Nisha Alexander - were seriously injured in the attack. Both of them suffered chop wounds and remain in hospital.

A police report said the attackers chopped Alexander on the head and feet with a cutlass and demanded money and jewelery. They locked her and her two young children in a bathroom and then attacked her husband in the bedroom where he was sleeping.

The report said the bandits chopped Hosein on his face, back, shoulder and mouth, then took cash and the keys to Hosein’s car and treied to escape.

Villagers heard the screams of the children and their mother and responded with deadly force. One person chased the bandits with a car and knocked them down. They then beat them and held them until police arrived.

An ambulance took the victims to hospital and police took the two bandits to the Princes Town district health facility where medical staff declared Contara dead on arrival.

Police are questioning one of the villagers about the incident. Police Commissioner Dwayne Gibbs on Friday cautioned citizens against using excessive force on persons caught committing a crime.

A police media release said, "The Commissioner of Police, Dwayne Gibbs, is concerned at the recent events where community residents have taken action against persons they have identified as a criminal threat in their communities.

"The Commissioner of Police cautions residents against excessive use of force against persons who may have been caught perpetrating the criminal act," a release stated.

"When residents take the law into their own hands the situation can quickly turn into a homicide," Gibbs stated.
