Jack visits Granny Luces and promises to repave road near her home

Works Minister Jack Warner chats with Granny Luces; PURE director Hayden Phillip looks on
Works and Transport Minister Jack Warner on Sunday visited popular marathon runner Lynette “Granny” Luces, 83, at her Quarry Road, San Juan, home.

The day before Luces was one of several hundred people who visited the minister during his constituency day in Chaguanas West when he agreed to meet anyone in the country who had an issue with respect the delivery of government services.

Granny Luces complained about the terrible conditions where she lives, so Warner decided to go out to Lewis Trace to have a look.

He told reporters, “I got a visit from ‘Granny’ Luces who spent several hours at my constituency office to complain about the terrible condition of her road. I felt as Minister of Works and Transport, I should go and see for myself, especially someone like ‘Granny’ who has done well in the field of athletics. I did not tell her I was going to visit.”

Hayden Phillip, Director of the Ministry’s Program for Upgrading Roads Efficiency (PURE), accompanied Warner. PURE is the executing agency responsible for road paving.

Luces said she was thrilled that the minister made the surprise visit. “This is the first time that a Government Minister has come here to see me,” Luces said.

She and Warner walked the 40 steps to reach her home. She took him inside and showed off the more than 100 trophies and medals she has won during her long career as a sportswoman.

Warner assured her that he would get the road paved and when the job is done he would invite Prime Minister, Kamla Persad-Bissessar to open the road.
