Fire leaves 100 homeless in San Fernando; police suspect arson

A fire at an apartment complex in South Trinidad owned by the Housing Development Corporation has destroyed at least five apartments and left about 100 people homeless.

The fire started in the top floor of the building at Balisier Avenue, Pleasantville and spread quickly. Investigators suspect arson.

Some people living in the complex reported hearing loud bangs followed by the crackling sound of fire.

“I do not know what it was they threw inside the door. However, it caused a big fire. I myself cannot even remember how I reached outside to safety,” one resident told reporters at the scene.

Several apartments suffered heavy damage from water and are unfit for occupation.

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) visited the scene to survey the damage and try to help victims. Officials have made arrangements for the victims to stay temporarily at the nearby Pleasantville Community Centre.
