Jack Warner, the man who put the issue of hanging killers on the front burner, was angry Monday and said the death of Daniel Guerra is reason enough for the return of the hangman.
Daniel was last seen alive on Friday; his body was found Sunday in a river near the Tarouba overpass.
"This is part of the reason why this capital punishment bill is so important," Warner told the Trinidad Express.
"I don't know if it is murder, but if it is murder, it is very unfortunate and if it is not murder one must find out why this child died, because this is a tragedy of immense proportion and this country cannot afford to lose its young children this way and I am very very saddened over this," he added.
The Opposition told Parliament last week when the "hanging bill" was introduced that it supports the death penalty but not the bill before legislators because it feels it will not cause anyone to hang.
Warner said, "I'm disappointed because at the end of the day they made some vacuous and empty statements and they have not said anything in terms of how the bill should arrest the crime situation."
He added, "If the bill is not good tell us where, why, how...The fact is we cannot continue so, criminals are turning their nose to the law and order."
Warner again slammed the sickout by policemen last week that left the private residence of the Prime Minister unguarded.

He noted that while Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar wants to give the police the respect they deserve he would not have been that generous.
"I say to you if I were ever the Prime Minister - and I don't have those aspirations - I swear to God these guys would have been permanently sick," Warner said.
