PTSC, Works Ministry put on extra buses to cope with Maxi strike

The Ministry of Works and Transport and the Public Transport Service Corporation (PTSC) pulled out all stops from early Wednesday to ensure that commuters along the country’s main transit routes faced the minimum of inconvenience during the protest by maxi taxi and taxi service operators.

The action by the taxi service personnel is to protest government's plans to iintroduce PH taxi services.

Minister of Works and Transport, Austin Jack Warner and junior transport minister  Rudy Indarsingh joined PTSC Chairman Devant Maharaj and senior PTSC officials in coordinating strategies to alleviate undue hardship to the travelling public.

The PTSC provided 127 buses from the Port of Spain hub along the Priority Bus Route. On a normal bus the service uses about 25 buses. The PTSC also deployed about 90 vehicles from the San Fernando location.

The minister and officials spent time at some of the main commuting points along the East-West Corridor to ensure that operations went smoothly.

Chairman Maharaj said the impact of the protest was minimal, with little inconvenience to the travelling public, as a result of the corporation’s concerted efforts.

He thanked PTSC staff who worked diligently to provide a safe, adequate and reliable public transportation service today and in the future. He made special mention of the engineering department that worked hard to repair many vehicles to meet Wednesday's demands.

Drugs are not transported in taxis or buses. They are transported in private vehicles. All arrests for drugs have been with private vehicles.
