POS Mayor to temporarily move city fruit vendors to Salvatori site

The mayor of Port of spain announced on Thursday that from Monday city fruit vendors will begin using the empty Salvatori building site at the corner of Independence Square and Frederick Street in the heart of the city.

"We are going to accommodate a number of vendors on the old Salvatori site to assist with the apples and grapes trade, the fruits trade and of course there are ordinary citizens who at this time will have in their possession goods which they will wish to sell," he said.

He said the intention is to prevent people wanting "to make an honest living" during the holiday season to block the free passageway to stores.

"We cannot condone that kind of activity and so we have to organise our city," He said the city is dealing with the vending challenges in other areas, such as nearby Charlotte Street. He said he hopes to end that problem by the first quarter of the new year with the conversion of the area to a pedestrian mall.

Lee Sing said starting Monday all vendors who apply and are approved will be able to set up shop on the site for a three-week period ending December 30.

"All vendors who are given the option to sell there must break camp at 6 p.m. on the evening of the 30th and move on so that I can return and restore the property and return it to the Ministry of Works and Transport," Lee Sing said.

"It is our hope that with more planning time next year, we would be able to find similar types of accommodations for that same period," the mayor said.

He added, "I want to serve notice that once we have constructed the mall in lower downtown Port of Spain there will be absolutely no vending on the streets of Port of Spain other than those people who have been given designation and badges as part of our present roll call of vendors," he said.
