On this joyous occasion of Christmas 2010, I extend season’s greetings and best wishes to you and all members of your family.
When we ushered in the new year 2010, we had many serious concerns about our beloved nation, leading to a sense of hopelessness all over the land.
Then in April, the former Prime Minister in his wisdom decided to call a snap election, thinking that those in opposition to his party would be caught unprepared.
Well, you recall that our theme was, a snap election called for a snap response. In pursuance of our philosophy of uniting all our people, the Congress of the People took the lead in reaching out to all anti-PNM forces in the country, in a bold but necessary step to unite our political forces.
The result was a united force, with the expressed determination to fight the PNM on a one-to-one battle in every constituency. This was our campaign theme in the year prior.
We engineered the path for the People's Partnership Coalition, and under the leadership of Kamla Persad Bissessar, on Monday, 24th. May, 2010, the people of Trinidad and Tobago came out in their thousands and gave a resounding victory with a solid 29-seat victory.
That was truly a victory of the people, by the people and for the people as they placed their trust and hope in the PP Coalition Government to bring meaningful change to the country. This victory was further consolidated with another landslide victory at the Local Government elections on July, 26th. 2010.
Through all of this the Congress of the People has grown and matured. We now have 6 of our members on the Government Benches in the House of Representatives. We also have strong representation in the Senate and more significantly at the Local Government level with several Councillors/Aldermen/Mayors occupying important positions throughout the country.
I am extremely happy with the progress that our party has made over the past 4 years. We are now in a strong position because we have laid a strong foundation. The conduct of our recent Internal Party Election bears testimony to this and I look forward to next year’s Constituency Elections as well as election for Political Leader.
We made a solemn commitment to our people to change our country's economic and social path. And even though there are dark clouds hovering over us, I am certain that with the measures that our Government has presented to this nation, better days are ahead.
As we approach our 50th Anniversary of Independence in 2012 we do so with confidence. In this regard I recently announced at our Christmas Dinner at Paria Suites, the launch of our Patriotic series early in the New Year.
I urge all citizens to stand tall and stand by your country. Our success requires hard work and commitment to duty.
I have full faith in our people, especially our young people. Let us resolve to make our Nation great and, while we get our politics right, let us also get our economics right and indeed our governance and country right.
On behalf of the Executive and members of in the Congress of the People, I extend my sincerest greetings to all. Please be careful especially on our nation’s roads, Merry Christmas and a bright and prosperous New Year 2011.
Winston Dookeran | Political Leader, Congress of the People
