Stricter rules for GATE program: Karim

Fazal Karim says the Government-assisted Tertiary Education programme (GATE) will be under heavy scrutiny.

The Minister of Science, Technology and Tertiary Education was speaking Wednesday in Chaguanas in an address at the installation ceremony for nine state boards under his ministry.

Karim said people participating in the GATE program must take courses for which there is a market demand.

He also stated that a new campus of the University of the West Indies would be open in south Trinidad in September 2011. And he added that Tobago would get an integrated learning campus and workforce development centre.

The chairmen appointed are:
  1. Dr Allan McKenzie - College of Science, Technology and the Applied Arts of Trinidad and Tobago (Costaatt)
  2. Dr Michael Dowlat - the Accreditation Council of Trinidad and Tobago
  3. Hayden Ferreira - Caribbean Industrial Research Institute (Cariri)
  4. Prof. Indar Ramnarine - Institute of Marine Affairs
  5. Prof. Clement Sankat - National Commission for Higher Education
  6. Jwala Ramberran - National Institute of Higher Education, Research Science and Technology (NIHERST)
  7. Dhanraj Goolcharan - National Training Agency (NTA) who is currently project manager at Petrotrin
  8. Chandra Gupta Supersad - Youth Training and Employment Partnership Programme (YTEPP)
  9. David Lee , Metal Industries Company Ltd.
