Polls close in T&T general election

The polls have officially closed in the Trinidad and Tobago general election although many polling stations will remain open for a while to accommodate thousands of voters who have not marked their ballots.

There have been many reports of irregularities, the most common being confusion over location of polling stations and names missing from the voters' list.

Media reports say voting was heavy across the country, which could work in favour of the opposition People's Partnership (PP) led by Kamla Persad-Bissessar, the leader of the United National Congress (UNC).

If the PP wins, Trinidad and Tobago will have its first female Prime Minister and a coalition government that comprises the UNC, the Congress of the People (COP), the National Joint Action Committee (NJAC) and the Movement for social justice.

The coalition has campaigned on a promise to end crime and corruption and introduce a people-centred government.
Both parties are confident of victory but all indications are the PP will be victorious.

Results are expected later Monday evening.

JYOTI will monitor the results and provide a regular update throughout Monday evening until a final unofficial result.
