Jack Warner kept his promise to Laventille and on Saturday he launched the Makandal Daaga foundation for Laventille with an initial donation of $500,000 dollars to start the foundation.
Warner pledged to establish the fund when he addressed a political meeting on May 10 at which he lamented the neglect that the community has faced under successive government.
Warner spoke of "empty promises" from the PNM and said “Laventille does not need election promises from Patrick Manning. Laventille does not need paternalism of that sort.”
He said, “Laventille needs the opportunity to shine, as so many of her sons and daughters have shone, and are shining.
“With Makandal Daaga as my witness, with all gathered here as my witness...I make this promise...In my personal capacity, I will establish a Laventille Foundation for unleashing, encouraging and promoting the abundant sports and cultural talent, which abounds in Laventille.
“That Foundation will involve Laventilleans as Governors and Trustees and Programme Directors,” he said.
“I pledge to negotiate with my associates around the world in persuading them to be patrons of this Foundation; with the obligation of raising matching funds to match any amount generated by local friends of Laventille, dollar for dollar,” Warner said.
Speaking at the launch of the foundation, Warner said: "I hope to get in the shortest possible time $1 million to start this fund. But because of the campaign and so on I didn’t have time.
"People called and wanted to help but I could not access the help. The fund is for the advancement of education, community development, arts, culture and sport for the underprivileged citizens in Trinidad and Tobago who reside in Laventille," Warner added.
He said the Foundation would also help people in Laventille who need of help because of health, disability, financial hardships or other disadvantages.
