Jack supports no one; May the best person win

Chaguanas West MP Jack Warner said he is not supporting any single leadership candidate for the internal election of the United National Congress (UNC) in the party's internal election on January 24.

"I have always said that I trust the Party membership to make the right decision and I know it will, therefore, may the best person win," the UNC deputy leader said in a media statement from Cape Town, South Africa following a series of FIFA meetings and Friday's World Cup draw.

Warner noted that the internal election is a result of the change for which the Ramjack-G faction has been clamouring.

"We asked for change; we asked for elections in the Party; we asked for democracy, and a free and fair election has been promised for January 24, 2010. "This is the result of our hard work," he said.

"We asked to let the people's democracy prevail and we do look forward now to seeing this happen...When the elections are over we will work with whoever is the leader to make the changes which are necessary to rebuild our great Party to win the next general election.

"The purpose of the Movement for Change has been to effect change in the Party and I am happy that this change is now taking place, which means we have served our purpose so far.

"I have said before that Kamla is a person who is well-qualified and quite capable to lead the Party and I stand by that.

"I have also supported my friend and political colleague Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj who is also well qualified for the post of Political Leader.

"What we are seeing in the UNC is a revival of democracy but there is still some distance to go.

"However, the fact that Mr. Panday is facing for the first time, challenges from top members of our Party for the leadership shows that these members are confident that the UNC needs to change and that they trust the membership to make the right decision," he said.

Warner also
reaffirmed that he will be contesting the post of Chairman, adding that better days a coming for the UNC.

He also invited supporters to a Cottage meeting at Bamboo# 2 Village Community Centre on Monday, Dec. 7 at 7:00pm and a public meeting of the Ramjack-G faction at Spring Village Community Centre on Wednesday, December 9 at 7:00pm.
