PM Kamla receives petition on behalf of Dominicans of Haitian descent

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar on Wednesday received a letter from the Trinidad and Tobago based mas and consciousness-raising organisation, Jouvay Ayiti, in support of Dominicans of Haitian descent.

The petititon relates to a ruling in September 2013 by the Constitutional Court of the Dominican Republic that takes away Dominican citizenship from persons born in the country whose parents were immigrants. The ruling is retroactive to 1929 and denies citizens to tens of thousands of opersons born in the Dominican Republic.

A media frelease from the Office of the Prime Minister said Persad-Bissessar has noted "with great concern" the issues raised in the letter. It added, "She recognises the difficulty and uncertainty that those persons in the Dominican Republic whose status and rights have been cast in doubt now face."

The Secretary General of the Organisation of the American States (OAS), Jose Miguel Insulza, issued a recent statement in which he affirmed that the OAS through its Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), “will continue to work…to find a solution with the maximum degree of agreement, the maximum degree of openness and the maximum degree of goodwill”.

The Prime Minister, in her capacity as current Chair of CARICOM, will continue to monitor developments in the Dominican Republic and will consult with the Bureau of CARICOM and His Excellency Irwin LaRocque, Secretary General of CARICOM, on the best way forward to seek a solution to the issue, the OPM release stated.
