PM congratulates German Chancellor on victory in election

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has congratulated German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, on her third consecutive victory at the polls.

In a media release from the Office of the Prime Minister, Persad-Bissessar said:

"On behalf of the Government and People of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and on my own behalf, I extend sincere congratulations to you on your success in the recent federal elections.


"Your election to the post of Chancellor in 2005 marked a watershed moment in Germany’s history when you became the first female Chancellor and your re-election for a third consecutive term demonstrates the confidence of the People of the Federal Republic of Germany in you to serve as their leader.

"As a fellow first female Head of Government, I wish to commend you on your strong and balanced leadership and on the pivotal role that you and your Government play in supporting the political and economic strength of the European Union.

"The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and the Federal Republic of Germany have enjoyed an active and very fruitful bilateral relationship for over five decades and I wish to reaffirm the commitment of the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago to strengthen further the bonds of friendship and cooperation that exist between our two countries. 

"Your Excellency, I convey to you the best wishes of the Government and People of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago for the future success and continued prosperity of the Federal Republic of Germany, and I take this opportunity to reiterate the assurances of my highest consideration and esteem."
