Trade unions are marching in Port of Spain Friday in what they have callled a “march for justice.”
The event, which has been organised by the Joint trade Union Movement, begins at Woodford Square at one in the afternoon and ends at Adam Smith Square, Woodbrook.
The opposition People's National Movement (PNM) has been appealing to people to join the march. The Movement for Social Justice (MSJ) and the Oilfield Workers' Trade Union are also mobilising support in various parts of the country.
However not all labour groups are joining the march. The Alll Trinidad Sugar and General Workers Trade Union has issued a media release stating that while it supports the principle behind the demonstration it cannot join a march that includes the PNM.
The union said it is the PNM that closed the sugar industry putting thousands of workers on the breadline.
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has denounced the march as politically motivated and has asked citizens not to join the march, which she said is aimed at trying to embarrass the government while CARICOM leaders are meeting in Trinidad.
