Letter: gordon shows lack of class

With reference to today's Newsday's report of its exclusive phone-in interview with Integrity Commissioner Ken Gordon ("Integrity Commission chairman: Why should I resign" by Andre Bagoo,http://newsday.co.tt/news/0,179378.html), let me state I'm alarmed over the way Mr Gordon brushed aside the cascade of calls for him to resign.

His fallback position was there's no basis for him to relinquish his job. In other words, he was signalling he'd only be removed kicking and screaming, the type of display normally expected of persons who lack any form of integrity. If that's the case, so be it!

The Commission didn't come into existence on its own or to serve its own ends: it was created by an Act of Parliament and its commissioners and staff do fall under its purview.

Its purposes were and are to instil, reinforce and maintain above-board operations by hundreds of named officials, as they conduct business on behalf of the public, so the Act outlines certain, severe strictures aimed directly at the commissioners and staff, to prevent them improperly carrying out their duties.

If Gordon believes it isn't a serious breach of protocol to host a hastily-arranged meeting at his home with the Opposition Leader, and at that meeting to disclose to the Opposition Leader information which, by dint of the Integrity Act, must be kept confidential, then let the judge tell him that after he's charged.
