Nominations open for CWC by-election; every member of the UNC can seek nomination: Kamla

A supporter greets PM Kamla Persad-Bissessar on her arrival for a political meeting in Gasparillo
Kamla Persad-Bissessasr announced on Monday night nominations are open for the by-election in Chaguanas West and any member of the United National Congress (UNC) can seek the nomination.

She also invited nominations for the local government election and said unlike the opposition People's national Movement (PNM) her party calls elections when they are due

However she did not announce a date for the by-election that has come about because of the resignation of the MP, Jack Warner. Warner resigned with effect from midnight on April 26. However Speaker of the House of Representatives Wade mark has not yet declared the seat vacant.

Mark is expected to do that and Friday which would give the Prime Minister a maximum of 90 days to set the election date.

She said there's no reason to "get ahead of ourselves" and noted that when the seat is declared vacant "our national executive will meet and work out the details … and I’ll announce a date for that election."

The UNC political leader assured supporters that the party is stronger than ever, describing it as "solid as a rock".

"Today our party is stronger than ever; our partnership remains strong and united," she said.

"So, don’t be troubled about Chaguanas West.
Don’t be troubled about your party. Your Party is in good hands.

"The UNC remains strong and united and we continue to live by our philosophy of justice, equality, democracy and freedom...

“This is your party and we work for you. And every member including the political leader must follow the rules. No one member is bigger or more important than the party,” she said.

Persad-Bissessar said she loves every member of the UNC "and every single citizen of our great country but, we love our country more than any single individual."

She thanked the former MP for his service to the country. "Let us thank him for the service to the party and to the people of Trinidad and Tobago" she said as shethrew some picong at the PNM. "Even if they put up Rowley as the candidate, he would lose his deposit," she said.
