Letter: Media too harsh on AG Ramlogan

Why is the media so harsh on AG Anand Ramlogan?

He took quite a beating on the OPV arbitration and section 34 but has proven his legal skills beyond doubt indeed,he has won two matters that many predicted could not be won.

The US Government has showered praise on him for the recent extradition of Ms Doreen Alexander who is wanted in the US for the murder of her husband who is a war veteran. There was precious little in the media about this accommodation from 'Uncle Sam' at a time when many were trying to portray a negative relationship between the United States of America and Trinidad and Tobago.

Mr David West is entitled to seek his client's (Doreen Alexander) interest. In so doing, he is not entitled to attack the AG for extraditing his client when he clearly failed to do what is necessary to obtain an injunction to block her removal. In Ish and Steve's case the Court of Appeal had granted such an injunction.

The AG must act in the best interest of the state and I wish to recognize the US Government in applauding his quick action in extraditing Ms Alexander as all the other co-accused were already facing criminal charges before a US grand jury.

In a sense, she was the critical missing link and it was therefore the proper thing to do. Had the AG done otherwise he would have clearly been acting in dereliction of duty.
