Letter: PNM likes it so when it comes to crime

I feel so satisfied to see that the bill which was debated in the parliament on Friday has received some strong support throughout the country.

And to think that all of this is happening despite harsh criticisms given from the Opposition forces — it is just a case of light over darkness.

The way I see it, the country has reached a point where they are simply beginning to understand the importance of the fight against crime. They have in some small way been touched by crime and the criminal elements. The more time progresses the more dangerous the situation becomes.

This is why I feel that after the serious progress made by this Government in fighting crime is not to be ever neglected.

The PNM elements seem to just be interested in giving leeway to the criminals instead of actually doing something to bring these people to justice.

Why would they do such a thing?

Well firstly, their major support groups are in those hot spot communities, secondly they are trying to score cheap political points and thirdly they anticipate that if this Government cannot fight crime, then they will be finally seen (after their smashing defeat in the 2010 general election) as a worthy candidate for the office of government.

Having the support from the people is a clear signal that they are willing to do what it takes in the law to get rid of crime and ensure that their families are safe and sound.
