PM Kamla names PP's presidential nominee Monday

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar will meet on Monday with Keith Rowley and a delegation from the People's National Movement (PNM) to discuss the PNM's proposed "consensus" candidate for the post of President of Trinidad and Tobago.

The meeting is scheduled for 10:30 in the morning at the Diplomatic Centre. She has also promised that during the day Monday she would reveal the name of her governing coalition's sole candidate for the presidency.

Local media have been tossing around the names of several prominent people, generating a national conversation on who is best suited for the post.

However, Persad-Bissessar and her coalition have been silent on the matter, preferring instead to respect the privacy of persons who are being considered for the post.

JYOTI appreciates the need for confidentiality and privacy in this affair and will continue to maintain its policy of not speculating about who might be the governing coalition's nominee.

We believe the government will act in the best national interest and select a person who will fit the profile for a head of state.

Last week when she announced her intention to name the nominee Monday, Persad-Bissessar stated:

"The President ...stands as a voice of reason and moderation in our multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multi-religious society. The right person has to be chosen.

"The choice is one which will also bind us as a nation for the next five years."

JYOTI agrees, and wishes to offer congratulations in advance to whoever is chosen. God speed in the task ahead!
