Letter: Newspaper editorial missed an essential point

The Express editorial, "What's missing in Tobago campaign", is an enlightening commentary which everyone should read.

Its value does not lie so much in what it did say or recommend, it lies in what it didn't. Here it is, the leading rag in the Anglophone Caribbean, omitting/neglecting to highlight/point the vital role the media play in helping both the government and the public make the right decisions and do the right things at all times.

In particular, I refer to the core around which the editorial is built - the 2013 THA election campaign. Rather than using the mighty resources it commands to excoriate, condemn and banish the PNM's highly inflammatory remarks and campaign, the newspaper tries to make out that other issues are more significant as the time for the opening of the polls looms ever closer.

Racism is bigotry, pure and simple!
The side that launched the vitriolic remarks has always insisted it is. Bigots have no place sitting in decision-making positions, especially where such positions impact directly and extensively upon all citizens.

Accordingly, I urge the media to focus on the real issues, not the peripheral ones, for many persons turn exclusively to newspaper for facts.
