New, improved property tax coming in 2013: Tewarie

Planning Minister Dr Bhoendradatt Tewarie said Wednesday the government would introduce a "new and improved" property tax in 2013.

He told the Express newspaper the estimated loss in revenue from the waiver of taxes is about $360 million. Property taxes have not been collected since the new government was appointed.

In 2009, the former Manning People's National Movement (PNM) administration tried to implement a Property Tax Act but that was roundly condemned by citizens who mounted a huge "Axe the Tax" lobby, led by the Congress of the People (COP).

In the election campaign the People's Partnership promised to kill the Manning tax and kept that promise when it took office.

On Monday, Finance Minister Larry Howai served notice that a new tax will be coming. "We shall continue the waiver of tax liabilities which commenced in 2010 until the complete framework for implementing this tax is put into place," Howai said.
