UNC women support PM Kamla

The Women's Arm of the United National Congress (UNC) issued a statement Friday expressing pride in the party's political leader, Prime Minister Kamla Pertsad-Bissessar.

The statement by Oropouche West MP Stacy Roopnarine was in response to Persad-Bissessar's statement to the nation Thursday night on the matters relating to the Administration of Justice (Indictable Offences) Act and the proclamation of Section 34 and the subsequent repeal of the section.

"The Honourable Prime Minister has never lacked the courage to correct wrongs, make tough decisions and eliminate dishonesty and non performance wherever it was found," Roopnarine said.

"Her leadership today has brought with it a new level of expectation of good governance while just a few years before people merely shrugged at rampant corruption, nepotism and lack of accountability. Today the change is evident, as citizens demand more from the government, the Prime Minister listens and leads," she added.

"We also commend the Prime Minister for not taking hasty decisions in a matter of such serious concern to the people of Trinidad and Tobago, but rather she took the time to conduct the necessary investigations before taking action....she took decisive action and indeed showed her commitment to fulfilling her oath of office to serve 'without fear or favour' and to ensure a system of Accountability in her Government.

"We strongly condemn the view by some that there was any conspiracy in passing section 34 to benefit certain persons, as this bill was passed with the support of the Government, Opposition and Independent members in both houses of Parliament.

"As women of the UNC, we remain proud of a female leader who can make tough decisions in the best interest of the people of Trinidad and Tobago."
