The Senate has repealed Section 34 and passed the Amendments to the Administration of Justice Bill. However, five of the nine independents members did not vote in favour of the amendments.
The controversial section would have allowed a judge "on application by the accused to discharge the accused and record a verdict of not guilty if the offence is alleged to have been committed on a date that is ten years or more before the date of the application".
On Wednesday night the House of Representatives repealed the controversial section and unanimously approved the amendments.
President Max Richards completed the repeal process Friday by signing the documents to strike down the act.
