Police Commissioner Dwayne Gibbs and Deputy Commissioner Jack Ewatski, who have resigned with effect from August 7, will each receive ex gratia payments (a sum of money paid when there is no obligation or liability to pay it) of more than one million dollars from the government of Trinidad & Tobago.

Acting Attorney General Ganga Singh confirmed this on Wednesday noting that Gibbs would receive $1,277,420 and Ewatski would get $1,210,307.

In an official statement Singh noted that the amounts were recommended and approved by the National Security Council and the Cabinet. He also stated that" both men performed their duties courageously over the past two years".

The two top officers resigned 14 months ahead of the end of their contracts. Gibbs was getting a monthly salary of TT$108,992; Ewatski's monthly income was TT$104,000.

Singh said the payments were accepted "after consideration of all relevant facts, and is in keeping with applicable industrial relations practice, and the highest standards of governance...

"Their premature departure leaves an unexpired term of 14 months under their contracts of employment, with a before tax value of $1,684,557.33 and $1,590,073.33 respectively. The agreed ex gratia payments are intended to assist both gentlemen in their resettling efforts."
