T&T declares August 20 as the Eid national holiday

Trinidad & Tobago has declared August 20th the annual Islamic festival of Eid ul Fitr public holiday.

Communications Minister Jamal Mohammed made the announcement on Thursday at the weekly post cabinet media briefing. He said the date was agreed in consultations with several Muslim groups including ASJA, TIA, TML and others.
He said Muslims would most likely celebrate Eid ul Fitr on Sunday August 19th so the public holiday would be on the day after.

Eid marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting, (sawm) or Roza. Eid is an Arabic word meaning "festivity", while Fiášr means "breaking the fast".

The holiday celebrates the conclusion of the 29 or 30 days of dawn-to-sunset fasting during the entire month of Ramadan. It is a day of recognizance of Allah.
