Gibbs, Ewatski have no regrets; glad to have reduced homicides by 25%

Police Commissioner Dwayne Gibbs and Deputy Commissioner Jack Ewatski have no regrets in joining the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, and hope that Trinidad and Tobago will become a more peaceful place.

The two Canadians have resigned, effective August 7th. The Public Information Officer of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service,
ASP Joanne Archie, read a brief statement from the men at Tuesday's police media briefing.

The statement is published below:

"We wish to assure the national community that our decision was based on our own personal reasons. We are happy to be able to put certain measures in place, which we hope will continue to make the public of Trinidad and Tobago feel safer and secure. Some of the initiatives have included:

  • The Professional Standards Unit which deals with the issues of corruption within the Service
  • The introduction of modern policing approaches such as an air support
  • The introduction of the 21st Century Policing Initiative which sought to put police officers on the streets in the communities preventing the crime from occurring instead of having the officers sit in the Stations
  • A 25% reduction in homicides

"We recognise however, there is still much more to be done and we are certain that the fine officers in the organisation will continue to serve the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago to the best of their ability.

"We have no regrets in accepting the positions and we hope that Trinidad and Tobago will become a more peaceful place. Thank you."
