Vincent Cabrera on Saturday repeated his suggestion that now is the time for the trade union movement in Trinidad & Tobago to get directly involved in politics.
The president of the Banking, Insurance and General Workers' Union (BIGWU) is a strong advocate for an independent labour party.
Speaking at a meeting for terminated Unemployment Relief Programme (URP) workers, Cabrera said the laws in Trinidad and Tobago are anti-worker.
Cabrera was highly critical of the government for sharing responsibility for the URP among three ministries. He charged that the government made that move to frustrate workers who want to join unions in order to get better representation.

He also suggested the Industrial Relations Act is biased against workers. The trade union leader said workers must defend their rights by forming their own political party and cutting ties with the People's Partnership.
