City workers demand immediate removal of Mayor Lee Sing

Dozens of daily-paid workers of the Port-of-Spain Corporation staged a demonstration Wednesday to demand the immediate removal of Louis Lee Sing as Mayor of Port of Spain.

The pressure on Lee Sing stems from a letter he wrote to the chairman of chairman of the People’s National Movement (PNM) telling Franklin Khan that it was a bad idea for the PNM to be pushing a no confidence motion in the Prime Minister at this time.

The letter also raised issues of an alleged lack of democracy within the party and suggested that Opposition Leader Keith Rowley’s motion could backfire. Many party members agree with Lee Sing and have stated the the PNM lost political points during the debate.
The majority PNM members have demanded a meeting with Lee Sing and are planning to endorse a no confidence motion in the mayor.

The demonstrators, who gathered outside the Mayor's office, chanted “the mayor must go, the mayor must go”.

A union representative told local media the protest was aimed solely at the removal of Louis Lee Sing as mayor.

The workers claim that their sudden demand is not politically motivated. They said they are not pleased with some decisions of the mayor and charged that councillors are afraid of Lee Sing.

The PNM has met to discuss the impasse involving the mayor and sources have reported that a compromise is likely to be made to allow Lee Sing to keep his job.
