No conflict in dual roles: Abdullah

David Abdulah told local media Thursday there is no conflict in his dual role with respect to the dispute between the Oilfields Workers' Trade Union (OWTU) and State-owned Petrotrin.

Abdulah is a government Senator and also the leader of the Movement for Social Justice (MSJ), which is one of the five members of the governing coalition. He is also the general secretary of the OWTU.

"I was the general secretary of the union before MSJ and was the chairman of MSJ before I took over McLeod's position," Abdulah told the Express newspaper.

Labour Minister Errol McLeod gave up the leadership of the MSJ to focus on his ministerial responsibilities and the organisation handed the leadership to Abdullah.

Abdullah said the MSJ was aware of his OWTU connections and insisted that everything is above board.

"I am a full-time executive member of the union, so it is not a matter of solidarity with the union. I am part of the union's leadership," Abdulah stated.
