Tobago airport to open 24/7 to boost tourism

Transport minister Devant Maharaj said Friday the A.N.R. Robinson International Airport may soon be opened for 24 hours a day.

The minister made the comments after meeting with members of the Transport Board, which discuseed development of the airbridge service to boost tourism in Tobago.

The round the clock opening would  facilitate later domestic flights and increase the number of international flights, which is part of the overall improvement of services at the airport.

Maharaj said the change could see a dramatic increase in the number of passengers travelling to the island. last year about 100,000 passengers made the trip to the island.

The minister also said he is disappointed that no T.H.A official took up the invitation to be part of discussions on these matters. Those attending included the Chairman of Caribbean Airlines, George Nicholas III; Minority Leader in the T.H.A, Ashworth Jack, and Chairman of the Airports Authority, Gerald Hadeed.

Jack said he will be urging Transport officials to begin a service between Barbados and Tobago as well as other international markets. He agreed that there is a need to improve service in order to give the tourism sector in Tobago an opportunity to recover.

Hadeed said the Airports Authority would have to mobilise staff and system in order to have the 24/7 operation. he said the cost for the change will be worked out soon and promised more details on the initiative in about three weeks.
