Maternity leave to be extended to 14 weeks: McLeod

Government will soon increase maternity leave by one week, giving news 14 weeks of paid leave.

Labour Minister Errol McLeod told reporters the legislation on that will go before Parliament in a week. He also said the government is looking into five days of paternity leave.

“It’s all a work in progress. I look forward to bringing to Parliament one of these days, provisions that would encourage the males in our society,” McLeod added.

The extension of the maternity leave is a promise made in the election manifesto. it requires an amendment to the National Insurance legislation. 

The minister said the cost of the additional week will depend on the wage or salary of the respective person accessing the benefit. He said Government held consultations with all stakeholder partners, who have agreed with the measure.
