Jack Warner insisted on Saturday that the People's Partnership has "tremendous" support although its supporters are not being vocal about it.
The chairman of the United National Congress (UNC), the largest partner in the governing coalition, made the comment at the Centre of Excellence while addressing party members attending a seminar of the UNC Academy.
The chairman of the United National Congress (UNC), the largest partner in the governing coalition, made the comment at the Centre of Excellence while addressing party members attending a seminar of the UNC Academy.
Warner said the UNC has a philosophy that empowers people and that is why he is comfortable as a member of the party.
He was also highly critical of the opposition People's National Movement (PNM), stating that he could never support that party and be a member, noting that the PNM thrives on oppression, exploitation and creating dependency.
“I don’t feel at home there. I do not share their ideals,” he said, adding that he will not condone what the PNM had done to the country.
“I can never be a part of an organisation that has kept my own people living in conditions that were outlawed since the abolition of slavery," he said.
Warner also observed that those who supported the People’s Partnership Government are quiet and urged UNC supporters to raise their voices to defend the government.
“This silence is allowing the rhetoric of our detractors to go unanswered and makes their voices echo. It gives the impression that no one is happy—and that is not true, this Government has tremendous support,” he said.
Warner said the Academy is one of the vehicles through which the party will be able to stay vigilant. He lamented the fact that for the past decade "our country had been the victim of bad leadership."
He said, “A leadership that neglects its duties and responsibilities, that acts contrary to the public’s interest, imposes hardship on the population and does so in a dishonest, high-handed and arrogant manner accomplishes two things: unnecessary suffering upon the people and one who writes its own death warrant.”
