Ish, Steve and others in court on fraud charges

Businessmen Steve Ferguson and Ishwar Galbaransingh went to court Friday to answer charges of conspiring between January 1, 1995 and December 31, 2001 to obtain contracts and payments totalling $1.6 billion during the construction of the Piarco airport terminal.

They are charged with former government ministers Brian Kuei Tung and Sadiq Baksh, former chairmen of the Airports Authority Tyrone Gopee and Ameer Edoo, Amrith Maharaj and Peter Cateau.

Magistrate Ejenny Espinet asked the eight to submit to the court, in writing, the names of the witnesses they intend to recall for cross-examination and the specific reasons for recalling them.

On April 15, Special Prosecutor Gilbert Peterson made an application to have the case reopened in order to tender the new evidence from former deputy commissioner of police Maurice Piggott.

The defence objected but Espinet allowed the prosecution to tender the evidence on the grounds that the court is "duty-bound to allow the prosecution to produce evidence". She said both sides have to be heard and agreed to allow the defence to recall witnesses.
