The Trinidad & Tobago Ministry of Health has stated that diabetes and cancer are the biggest killers in the country.
And it says deaths due to Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases (CNCDs) such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer account for 60 per cent of total deaths, with cancer being the second leading cause of deaths among adults.
The ministry calls this an "epidemic" that is growing, noting that the choices people make in conducting their daily lives drive the problem.
The Ministry has embarked on a number of national strategies to influence citizens to modify their personal behaviour and lifestyle by making healthy choices.
The health promotion and illness prevention initiatives focus on the individual, the community and the national society. The strategy is to positively influence life choices with respect to:

- proper diet
- regular exercise
- maintaining a healthy body weight and Body Mass Index (BMI)
- promoting the responsible use of alcohol
- saying no to drugs and avoiding the use of drugs
- not smoking
- avoiding high risk behaviour, including, unsafe sexual practices
The Ministry of Health through policy, as part of One of its aims is to ensure a smoke-free environment for all citizens. And it says screening and early detection continue to be a cornerstone strategy in reducing the cancer mortality rate.
