Chamber welcomes end of curfew

The Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce issued a media release Monday welcoming news of the immediate end of the curfew on both land and sea.

The chamber is one of several organisations that called for an end to the nightly curfew.

It said its call had been based on feedback that its members – particularly the smaller organisations and those within the hospitality industry – had endured significant losses directly due to the curfew. It said the hardest hit were the ones who were least able to afford it.

It noted that while it wanted an end to the curfew it never objected to the state of emergency.

"While we accept that there has been a significant reduction in serious offenses during the period of the SoE and curfew as the statistics have indicated, the Chamber’s position remains, as always, supportive of the State of Emergency as only one of the government’s crime fighting tools.

"We are hopeful that the additional measures and initiatives stated by the Prime Minister," the statement added.
