UNC opens learning academy for its members

File: UNC CHairman Jack Warner with Political Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar at the inauguration of Persad-Bissessar as UNC leader following the January 2010 internal election
The chairman of the United National Congress (UNC) on Friday formally opened the party's learning academy describing it as a project to groom future leaders.

Jack Warner said, "Your goal must be about nurturing the political talent so that when we hand over the party and the government to you in the years to come our party and our country will be in safe comfortable hands."

The MP for Chaguanas West, who is also the Works and Infrastructure minister, told his audience that the academy must to be more than a venue of lectures.

"It must be a place of study. We must explore – as the Academy grows – the prospect for this school to become a full-fledged tertiary institution offering opportunities in accounting, law, social sciences, labour and, of course, political science.

"These things are possible through distance learning arrangements. So that when persons leave here, their time spent will be translated into a certificate that is recognized in the wider world," Warner declared.

Warner reflected on the UNC's founding principles, which incorporate the concept that knowledge is the key to power and a vehicle for empowerment.

He traced the country's history  of servitude through slavery and indentureship, reminding his audience that for the most part "our fore-parents arrived on these shores with little more than a spirit of determination."

He spoke of family life in difficult times and the perseverance in order to achieve upward mobility.

"Often other siblings in the family would have to do without so that one brother or one sister could go to school and become a doctor, a lawyer or a teacher. They made these sacrifices so that the family could be supported and in the hopes of providing a brighter future for the generations ahead," he said.

"We – every single one of us - are all products of that culture and that kind of thinking. We enjoy the lives we have today, with all its trappings and conveniences because education was recognized as something of tremendous value and worth pursuing," the UNC chairman said.

Warner seized the opportunity as well to talk about the work the UNC has done in the government, beginning with the Panday administration.

He said more than 400,000 people voted in 2010 to put the party and its political partners in office because they recognised that the UNC is based on service.

"We believe that the UNC has the right philosophy based on the principles of social justice, equality, and creating a merit  and knowledge-based society.

"We believe that everyone should have a fair chance at becoming whatever they dream of in their hearts and in their minds, regardless of where they come from, what they look like or whatever the means from whence they come. We believe that people should be happy and comfortable."

Warner spoke of the tremendous development that took place between 1995 and 2001 under the Panday administration and promised that the present administration would do even better. He said this is because those who government between 2001 and 2010 had a style of governance that was in contrast to the service oriented philosophy of the UNC.

"Brothers and Sisters, when you look at the last 15 months under the People’s Partnership, led by the Honourable Kamla Persad-Bissessar, herself a sterling product of the UNC philosophy as many of our leading members are, you see the dramatic difference in the way our country is being run," he said.

"Today, I tell you, that this government is beating our 1995-2001 record...Today, you are seeing performance like no other government has performed in the 500-year history of our islands.

"Governments in every other part of the Caribbean and beyond are looking on. They are amazed at the strides we have made in the few short months. They are talking about following from our example in leadership. And this is because of the tenets of our party," Warner added.

He said it is the dream of the founders of "this great party, as indeed it is the vision of our beloved Prime Minister that we must pass on the secrets of our success and the lessons from our failures."

He added, "We must share the knowledge and the philosophy so that it can live on; so that those of you who will carry the mantle of leading this country into a new future will be ably equipped. Through cumulative learning you too will out-do us when your turn comes at the helm."

"This is how we will become better politicians. This is how we will become better leaders. This is how we will understand why our country is where it is and, more importantly, how we will fix it and take it forward.

"When we say, “Long live the UNC,” through the UNC Academy that will come to pass. With our academy, the UNC IS and will be the future!"
