Suspect questioned about shipment of ganja

A glimpse of some of the marijuana found in a container at the PLIPDECO port
The Acting Comptroller of Customs and Excise confirmed Saturday that officials have questioned a suspect in connection with the multi-million dollar drug bust at PLIPDECO port on Thursday evening.

However, Anthony Chandler said so far no one has been detained or charged.

Customs and Excise officers found 38 crocus bags of compressed marijuana weighing nearly one tonne inside a container. The 40-foot refrigerated container was supposed to be carrying a shipment of frozen chicken.

Chandler said the ship which brought the container to Trinidad began its journey from the United states and made a stopover in Jamaica before departing for Point Lisas.

Chandler also confirmed that shipping documents have the identity of the person to whom the container was consigned.

"That information is known but to ascribe responsibility, in terms of what was found in the container, more investigations will have to be conducted before we can come to that conclusion.

"That is why we are cautious in terms of revealing the names of the entity because we don't want at this point in time to ascribe blame. Of course that person, or persons or entity, will have to be and already have been interviewed," he said.

"We are also liaising with our international partners so I can't say how close they are, but we are aggressively pursuing all leads."
