The heads of the three arms of government were present on Friday for the ceremonial opening of the new law term.
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar attended the ceremonial opening of the law term, the first prime minister to do so in almost a decade.
Persad-Bissessar donned her court clothes and attended the traditional service of divine worship at Holy Trinity Cathedral as well as the special sitting of the Supreme Court, which marks the opening of the term.
It was a notable event, which Chief Justice Ivor Archie acknowledged before reading his prepared speech.
"I would like to say how delighted we are to have both the Acting President and the Honourable Prime Minister here with us...
“It has been some time since we have had a sitting Prime Minister join us and her presence today, at which must be a particularly taxing time for her, underscores the cordial and collaborative atmosphere that has characterised our interactions this past year,” Archie said.
He added, “The occasions when the holders of the three highest offices gather in one place for an event of national significance are rare and it is important symbolically that we do so at a time when, more than ever, our nation needs to come together.
"It provides me with a unique opportunity and responsibility to continue my conversation with the nation since the judiciary, as one of the arms of the state, holds a critical role in our governance structure.”
