PM Kamla asks UN to support target for reducing NCDs by 25% by 2025

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar on Monday urged the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to support the establishment of global targets for the prevention and control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs).

She suggested a target of reducing NCDs by 25 per cent by 2025 and said the UN should appoint a Special Envoy on NCDs.

Persad-Bisessar was addressing the High Level Meeting on NCDs at the UN in New York. She said there is an urgent need to recognise the risks of such diseases and to determine both medical and non-medical solutions.

She proposed a redefination of the problem to focus on the “social determinants" in order tot win the war on NCDs.

Persad-Bissessar also said UN member states should strengthen the system and services for early detection and treatment with an emphaissi on the “mandated cause of NCDs.”

This would mean an endorsement by the UN of a “global strategy” that would see the UN partnering with countries for the prevention of NCDs to harness financial and other resouces not readily availale to non-developing countries.

Persad-Bissessar told delegates to the meeting if this goal is to be achieved there should be the support for:

  • the global targets for NCD prevention and control with a posible target of reducing NCDs by 25 per cent by 2025
  • redefining NCDs in terms of the conditions which drive the risk factors for development
  • commissioning a scientific technical working group to devleop a research agenda for NCDs and the establishment of a framework within wihich the global community can respond and measure efficacy of the response at all levels
