Emergency extended for 3 months; curfew hours changed to 11 pm to 4 am

The Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday approved an extension of the State of Emergency by three months.

It also approved a change of the curfew hours from the present times of 9 pm to 5 am.

On Sunday night the curfew began at the usual 9 pm with an end time of four in the morning.

Effective Monday night the curfew will begin at 11 pm and end at 4 am in the previously stipulated 'hotspot' areas.

The vote to extend the emergency measure needed a simple majority of 21 to pass but got the support of all 29 elected members of the People's Partnership.

Ten of the 12 opposition members voted against it. Patricia McIntosh is out of the country and Former Prime Minister and MP for San Fernando East Patrick Manning was absent when the vote was taken.

Manning did not speak during the debate. Opposition Leader Keith Rowley said he expected all his party's MPs to represent their respective constituencies.

"Mr. Manning is the Member of Parliament for San Fernando East, he represents the people of San Fernando East and the most the PNM can do is to expect that every MP will represent their constituents' interest to the best of their ability," Rowley said.
